21st June 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Hanford School-Shana Douglas in concert at the Hanford Festival of Performing and Creative Arts

For the past ten years, Shana has held the Sub-Leader position in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, where she is also on the Board of Directors.   The London-based American violinist’s recent performances include chamber music recitals at Kings Place and Barbican Hall, London, concertos by Barber, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák, and Mozart with orchestras in the UK and the USA, and a solo recital in Molière Hall in Lyon, France.

Shana has been featured as a soloist with orchestra twice at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and has also performed a full solo recital on the esteemed “Dame Myra Hess” Recital Series which took place in Chicago’s Cultural Center and was broadcast live on television and radio. While a student at Curtis, she performed alongside a distinguished line-up of violin virtuosos including Maxim Vengerov and Mark O’Connor in a benefit concert at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York, at the invitation of Arnold Steinhardt. A dedicated chamber musician, Shana has collaborated with renowned artists such as Atar Arad, Roberto Diaz, Gil Kalish, Kim Kashkashian, and Steven Tenenbom at festivals such as the Ravinia Festival, Chicago and the IMS Prussia Cove Open Chamber Music Sessions, Cornwall. Shana was also the Artistic Director of the former “Accord et a Cordes” Chamber Music Festival, which took place in the South of France for five summer seasons, and more recently, she has created The Glenn Douglas Winter Chamber Music Festival, ongoing for one week annually in North Miami Beach, Florida.

Shana will be accompanied on the piano by Julian Gallant.  Julian is a pianist, conductor and composer. He founded and conducted the Russian Orchestra of London in which role he worked with major soloists such as Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Janine Jansen and Peter Donohoe and premiered works by leading contemporary composers Rodion Shchedrin, Sir John Tavener and Naresh Sohal. Julian Gallant has conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in concert and in many recording sessions. He has also worked with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, Novaya Rossiya Orchestra (invited by Maestro Yuri Bashmet) and Russian Philharmonic Orchestra. Developing a keen parallel interest in opera, he has also conducted new and traditional productions at Helikon Opera (Moscow), the Novosibirsk State Opera, Kazakh State Opera and Georgian State Opera. On the piano, he’s had the privilege of accompanying the great Russian baritone Sergei Leiferkus and sopranos Marina Poplavskaya, Tatiana Pavlovskaya, Julia Gertsina and Diana Lamar. Julian composes and arranges music for use around the world and is often to be found conducting recording sessions at Abbey Road Studios in London.

Shana’s concert is part of a week-long festival of Performing and Creative Arts at Hanford School. There will be different concerts and talks every evening between 19 – 25 June. The festival ends on Sunday 25th with an open garden event, as part of the National Gardens Scheme, where there will be a live band, cream teas and a magician show.

Drinks will be available ahead of the concert from 6.30pm.
