Independent School Dorset

Hanford is an independent school for girls in Dorset, which encourages students to explore their creativity, develop a diverse mix of skills and hobbies, and take part in fun activities that let them remain children for as long as possible.

When it comes to creating a fulfilling learning environment, we consider ourselves a greenhouse rather than a hothouse. We encourage our girls to grow and flourish, by offering an enlightened education, small class sizes (usually just 10-12 pupils per lesson) and proven teaching methods that result in outstanding academic performance. The curriculum is taught by subject specialists, with children moving between classrooms for each lesson.

Hanford girls have the option of full-time boarding (which includes enriching activities during weekends and free time) or visiting on a daily basis. Full details of our fees (including optional extra curricular activities and music lessons) can be found here.

We understand that finding the right independent prep school is key to the success of any student, which is why we’re here to answer any questions you might have. Book a virtual open morning, find out more about admissions, or enquire today for further information.

Independent education for girls in Dorset

Hanford encourages the development of happy, well-rounded girls by delivering an outstanding curriculum, providing an exciting selection of activities and teaching the importance of good manners and social skills.

There have been 50 scholarships and awards received by our girls in the past five years, which we believe is a testament to Hanford’s approach to education.

A rich and varied experience for everyone

We believe that every child’s learning experience should be complemented by a carefully chosen selection of stimulating and engaging activities. Activities on offer include archery, coding, cookery and croquet, and we run several after-school and weekend clubs such as pottery, gardening and Brownies. We encourage the girls to use their free time to play, relax, climb trees, and develop their imagination.

Hanford is known for its ponies, and riding lessons remain a popular activity among the girls.

Our academic curriculum prepares girls with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the world. As well as creative subjects, modern languages and Humanities, we place a great deal of importance on ICT and STEM subjects, including Science and Maths. We also aim to encourage a lifelong love of sport, by providing an enjoyable mix of sporting activities including cross country and team sports such as hockey, netball and rounders.

As well as an outstanding academic curriculum, we are very proud of our character curriculum which aims to give the girls the tools they need to build up their intellectual and emotional character. We work closely with each girl to encourage the development of specific personality traits, finding fun ways to explore attributes such as creativity, resilience and confidence.
