The Young Shakespeare Company at Hanford
On Thursday 25 January, Hanford welcomed The Young Shakespeare Company who performed Shakespeare’s enchanting comic tale, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, in a fast-moving, interactive production which captivated and involved the girls in equal measure. It was a brilliant way to introduce our young audience to the delights of Shakespeare.
The actors brought the play to life in such an enjoyable and accessible way, the production is aimed at children between 6 – 11 years old. The girls were enchanted as the bustling Athenian market and the wood full of mysterious fairies and sprites came to life in Hanford’s Main Hall and roared with laughter at the market traders’ hilarious rendition of ‘Pyramus and Thisbe’.
Pupils were encouraged to become involved in the play and explore the motives, thoughts and feelings of the characters, exploring in detail how Hermia and her friends feel at every twist and turn of their confused night in the forest. Whilst several girls were invited to become individual characters in the play, all the pupils had the opportunity to speak and enjoy the bard’s text and we were delighted to welcome girls in the junior years from Sherborne Girls School and include them in the fun!
