Keeping the Hanford girls healthy and well is managed by a dedicated and kind team of nurses. Upstairs in the main house along the corridor from Matron’s Sit you will find the school surgery. The surgery is staffed during the day by a qualified registered nurse or nursing assistant. Together they look after the blisters, bumps and snuffles that are all part of growing up.
They keep confidential records of all the girls’ medical needs, caring for chronic and acute medical conditions. They are the key liaison with local health services which ensures girls are up to date with all their childhood vaccinations. They can also arrange travel vaccinations on request.
They have an amazing relationship with White Cliff Surgery, in Child Okeford, who provide Doctors who visit the school on a weekly basis. Girls can request an appointment with a Doctor as can their parents. However, in most cases it is the school nurse who arranges appointments, as she keeps a careful watch over the girls’ health. As a result we ask that all boarders are registered with White Cliff Surgery so that their records can be kept up to date.
We understand how anxious parents are when they hear their child is unwell while at boarding school. Our nurses are always on the end of the telephone to reassure parents of their daughter’s progress.
In the unlikely event of an emergency, parents are contacted immediately and girls are taken to one of the three local hospitals, Salisbury, Dorchester and Poole, accompanied by a nurse or a qualified first aider.
